Then she coughed, bending over and rocking on her feet. The buildup stopped, leaving him fettered by this bizarre binding. He spied the points of her ears twitching, and her gaze darted past him. Just as she hissed at something behind him, he heard movement and twisted his upper body around. There stood half a dozen men, large Viking-looking warriors, with swords at their sides and arrows already nocked to the strings of their raised bows.

But somehow she was twisting to dodge the onslaught. Whirling around in the air, she turned to dart into another alley, her speed incomprehensible. His hands shot down to claw his legs free, his fingers swiftly going numb. Just as the males behind him ran after her, Murdoch heard more fighting.

There are two groups. The force of her landing sent her skidding across the pavement. As she stabbed her claws against the bricks to right herself, a cloud of arrows followed her. The momentum took her out of his field of vision. Then an unfamiliar scent swept him up. Though his instinct told him it was blood, his mind rebelled. At last Murdoch broke free, tracing to intercept her. When he reappeared, his every muscle tensed in an instant.

The scent had been blood— hers. She was kneeling in a pool of it, her chest full of arrows. One of the males was holding her up by her hair, speaking in some foreign tongue. In his other hand, he held a glowing red blade. What had you been about to do to her? At the thought of those men loosing their arrows at her, the idea of her pain and fear, rage erupted in him. The need to protect her, to destroy those who sought to harm her, burned within him.

This strange female belonged to him alone. And these killers would die before they relinquished her. With tears running from her silvery eyes, she spoke, a whisper directed to him, loud above all sounds. Will he help me? Danii saw them with her vision flickering.

Now his brows had drawn together at the sight of her injuries. He grated, Mercy? Then something seemed to. His fists clenched, and he bared his sharpened fangs. His body appeared to get even bigger. They were expert bowmen, their fey speed unmatched in the Lore. And there were too many of them. At least eight stood between the vampire and her. They were already building ice grenades in their palms.

With an unholy roar, the vampire charged, half tracing, half sprinting. Five of the Icere rushed to intercept him, lobbing grenades with lethal speed. But he dodged each volley, and the ice the warriors had just surrendered exploded all around him in the alley. Like some living thing, a freezing glaze crawled over the battered brick walls, skittering all the way up to the fire escapes, coating the street. The vampire clashed with the wall of Icere, battling his way to her, slashing through the warriors with a startling brutality.

The poison had weakened her, but she still fought him. Her claws sank into his arm and tore, rending skin and bone, all but severing it. He yelled in pain and dropped her hair to take his knife in his good hand, shoving it against her neck.

In answer, a savage bellow sounded; she and her captor looked up just in time to see the vampire flying at him.

One second the knife was at her throat. The others took up their bows and charged him as one, the sound of their bowstrings louder than their footfalls. The impact of the arrows slammed the vampire against a glazed wall, shattering the ice. He roared with fury, his arms twisting back to pull the arrows free. Just as he tore all but one of them from his body, the Icere were upon him. She could see him grappling again and again to get to her, yet they kept hold of him, preventing him from tracing.

Danii tried to crawl away from the skirmish, but the arrows jutting from her chest made movement impossible, and the poison was too strong. Thermal shock. A nightmare way to die. She was about to be executed, and for no reason. Her would-be savior stumbled. From the ice coating the street? No, he seemed to be fighting some inner possession.

Blood poured from his wounds. The Iceren bellowed in pain. Seeming fresh to the fray, the vampire grew even stronger—and more vicious, appearing intent on making it hurt as he dispatched them. Soon scattered limbs littered the alley at gruesome angles. He easily separated heads from savaged necks, yelling as if with pleasure as the blood flowed.

Yet he never bit them. As he faced off against the last one standing, she wondered how much of the blood covering him was his own. Unseen behind the vampire, he struggled to his feet and silently collected his sword. At her warning, he twisted around. She gritted her teeth and fisted one of the bloody arrow shafts.

Choking back a scream, she wrested it from her body. The last thing she saw was the vampire snapping his head back to smash the face of the one holding him, breaking free to snatch up a sword. When she forced her lids open once more, he was staggering toward her, his fangs still bared, his eyes black amid the blood covering his face.

Dropping to his knees beside her, he reached for her wrist. She shrank from him, but not quickly enough to prevent contact. His tone was rough, almost snarling. The big male was so unsure, so confounded by her nature. If the vampire brought her to her coven, her sisters would behead him on sight and ask questions later.

But his breaths mocked him, his thundering heart a constant reminder. When his heart had first beat in the midst of the fight, it had sounded like an explosion, stunning him and nearly costing him his life. But Nikolai had neglected to tell him that instinct, raw and bare, would take over.

He ripped away the bottom of his shirt and wrapped his hands, then gently scooped her into his arms. Though their skin never touched, the movement jostled the arrows, making her whimper in pain.

He clenched his jaw, wanting to slaughter those fucks all over again, to punish them slowly. Why did she want him to care for her? Why would she think him capable of it? She tried to focus on his face, her silvery eyes going blank.

But the one below had been stronger, faster. Now it crouched over Daniela the Ice Maiden. Crouched protectively. An unlikely ally for the female? He turned from the carnage, ignoring the low creatures that had already begun feeding on his fallen comrades. He walked on with the knowledge that Daniela was a threat that could no longer be ignored. Just as Danii dimly perceived a bed beneath her, pain exploded in her chest. She woke to her own screaming, writhing in agony, bucking away from the source.

She cracked open her lids, found herself on a mattress on the floor in some dark-paneled room. The vampire was surveying her with eyes the color of obsidian, a knife in one of his gloved hands.

How did you—? He finished slashing away the rest of her dress, leaving her in panties. He set aside the knife, seeming more uncomfortable with her nudity than she was. With a swallow, he wrapped his fist around an arrow just above her breast. He used his other hand to press her shoulder into the mattress. She met his eyes and nodded.

His gaze was frenzied, yet it comforted her. Never looking away, she gritted her teeth. She choked on a scream, and lightning exploded just outside the house. His eyes darted around uneasily as he tossed the arrow to the floor. Between panting breaths, she cried, Remind me.

Another yank, another scream swallowed. Outside, lightning flashed once more, and thunder rocked the roof timbers. He warily gazed upward before his attention settled on another arrow. As he worked the next shaft free—this one was lodged in her sternum—she clenched her fists into the sheets, fighting not to twist from him.

The arrowhead grated against bone as it finally gave way. She choked on a hysterical laugh, sending her into a wet coughing fit. Blood bubbled from her mouth when she uttered, Beautiful. His expression darkened. I know. He was brother to Nikolai, which meant he was one of the Wroths, four Estonian warlords famous in their time for their ruthless defense of their country.

Five years ago, the Valkyrie had learned from Myst that two of the brothers had been turned to vampires. Nikolai and. Stay with me. Had he smoothed a gloved hand over her hair? Only one left, he said, then added in a murmur, Brave girl.

For some reason, she felt a rush of pride that he saw her as brave. She struggled to remain conscious, wavering in and out. This plainly infuriated him. He frowned as if she was confusing him, or more like she was throwing him. Last arrow. This one was wedged under her collarbone, refusing to come out.

Almost finished, sweet. He pinned her to the mattress, twisting and pulling as she bit back a shriek. Just hold on. Finally, it gave way in a rush of blood. He threw it aside. Now what do I do? Even with the arrows removed, too much poison remained inside her.

Death by shattering. Porcelain doll. Murdoch swooped her up so fast his wounded leg almost gave way. In a flash, he traced her to the bathroom. Inside, he began running a cold bath. As he ripped open the bags to dump their contents into the water, he muttered, This feels wrong to me. Goes against everything I know. But when she was up to her neck in it, she sighed in relief. When the fear in her eyes ebbed. Are you still in danger from the poison?

Her face was still flushed angrily. If cold was good for her, then she needed more of it. He traced to the thermostat, turning on the air-conditioning full force. Open navigation menu. Write a review Review must be at least 10 words. Two great series!!!!!!! In my ongoing tribute to Kresley Cole and the Immortals After Dark series during the month of November , I am attempting to read as many books in this series as possible.

Danii is from Icere and can only be touched by her own kind because if she gets too warm she will shatter. Murdoch was changed into a vampire unwillingly and has a manwhore reputation. When they cross paths it quickly becomes a tense situation and before Murdoch knows what hit him, his heart starts beating, and we all know what that means. This is another predicament where the mated couple find themselves in a situation where they must overcome some huge obstacle in order to be together.

This couple is unable to touch and must get creative to find sexual release. I found the prospect of not being touched for two thousand years to be a really sad situation to say the least, so I felt worse for Danii than anyone else.

Murdoch was the usual IAD type alpha, and I did like him, he is funny and maybe a little romantically impaired, and of course stubborn and resistant to commitment. There is a little action and adventure as always, plus, I just happened to fit this one in at the perfect time due to a cozy holiday reference at the end of the book. Overall, I enjoyed this story, but it wasn’t my favorite in the series.

Still, it’s a worthy addition to the series and a must for all IAD fans. While this is a novella length story, it’s given the most space in the book. The Showalter story is very brief, but for the sake of time, I will have to go back and read it at another time. Daniela and Murdoch. Primarily read for Kresley Cole short story. The other by a different author was garbage.

Gena Showalter, sometimes you try too hard. Although I like these brothers, I think this book was by far the weakest. I felt it could have been better edited. It’s in an anthology, but really isn’t a novella but a full length book.

At times even that didn’t seem like Cole gave the story her full attention. It just wasn’t up to her usual standard. After all, I had figured out by the first kiss what the solution to their problem of Daniella being to cold to touch could be.

Kresley Cole’s Untouchable follows vampire and former ladies’ man Murdoch Wroth as he comes to terms with being blooded by a Valkyrie Ice Maiden to whom his touch literally brings pain.

Getting past her physical hang-ups is problematic, but breaching this bachelor’s resistance to settling down with just one woman? Practically impossible. Gena Showalter’s contribution has less connection to the winter theme, unless you count the fact that it’s Christmas. And apparently the season for alien invasions. In this case, a hot tip about an alien plague turns out to have targeted the wrong aliens, but for one AIR operative being taken captive turns into a truly revealing experience.

As others have noted, Cole’s story is the stronger of the two. Showalter’s might have developed more smoothly given a longer timeline and a few more pages to work with.

I greatly enjoyed this story. I was not expecting it to be as long as it was, since it was only part of the book, but it was pages or so. Danii and Murdoch have a huge hurtle in front of them. Daniela is part Iceren and cannot be touched by anyone with a normal body tempature or they will burn here.

Murdoch is a “manwhore” who has a bride that he cannot touch without burning her and causing extreme amounts of pain. Nucking futs Nix plays a large roll in this story also I cannot get enough of her. This is a great story that brings the world of Lore with many great characters. Deep Kiss of Winter 4 Stars Review of Untouchable only Synopsis Vampire Murdoch Wroth never wanted to be blooded but when his heart starts beating again at the sight of Daniella the Ice Maiden he will stop at nothing to have her.

Unfortunately, Daniella suffers intense agony when touched. Can these two unlikely lovers overcome the obstacles? Review The timeline is concurrent with the first 5 IAD books and the recaps of the various stories are enjoyable. It is also great seeing the details from Murdoch’s perspective. The introduction to the Icere Ice Fey is interesting and some of the aspects of the Valkyrie are clearer to me now.

The romance, however, it not the best. The epilogue with the four Wroth brothers and their Brides is very endearing. The ice motif, while unique and beautiful, is not conducive to creating a sense of intimacy and closeness for Danii and Murdoch. Unlike Neomi and Conrad, whose relationship was intense and steamy despite their inability to touch, Danii and Murdoch lack the emotional attachment of the other relationships in the series.

Overall, an entertaining novella and it was nice to have closure to the Wroth brothers. So I totally got Murdoch. Why then would I like him? Because he overcomes his fears, changes, and sticks with her.

THAT is the heart of a good love story imo. As another person observed- Cole knows how to write winning characters without becoming repetitive in a series.

I totally agree. If you haven’t started the Immortals After Dark series- what’s stopping you?? Those books were def. I’m anxious to hear more from these lovely warriors and hope to see more of them in some of Showalter’s other tales!

I like how it told what was going on from their side of things through several of the other books we’ve already read. You get a new perspective on how events looked outside that particular couple’s story. It was great to see the Wroth brothers all together and happy at the end and I hope we see more of them in future books. This is the second book in this series that has made me consider this rating.

I am a fairly easy to please reader, there are few things that will set me off on characters or their actions. That being said there are a few things and this story has them. I would also like to say that I love the concept of all these mythical beings. They make the stories seem more paranormal. There aren’t just werewolves and vampires but a whole plethora of beings all with their own histories and failings. Murdoch is blooded by Daniella and they start a dance trying to find a way to be together.

Daniella is excited that she has found someone that will be all her own. There are a number of complications along the way to their happily ever after though. Besides not being able to kiss or touch, Murdoch is looking for Conrad and then trying to get him over his blood lust.

Daniella is trying to come to terms with her past. Daniella is impatient, narrow minded and at times unreasonable. Danii is perfectly happy with the way things are most of the time.

Murdoch doesn’t give her permission to make any changes she just takes it upon herself. It takes almost the whole story for her to realize that she has been hoping that the relationship will fail. At that point it is almost too late for anything to be saved.

Murdoch is stuck in the seventeenth century and doesn’t want to leave. He has been happy with his life. He doesn’t want to settle down with any one woman. He has played the field most of his adult life and he is happy to continue if he could. He is angry that he isn’t given a choice of his Bride. He makes quite a few mistakes with Danii, some of them I would have locked the door and never talked to him again.

He also realizes what needs to be done so they can finally touch. Murdoch proves that he can be a loving companion and husband. This book covers the globe. Cole does a very good job of keeping this story interesting. She keeps the reader looking for the solution to the lovers problems, dropping in secondary characters and bring in plots for previous books. I could have been very frustrated with this story but Ms.

Coles’ skillful story telling kept me on track until the end. I really enjoyed this book Murdoch was a great male lead in that he wasn’t overbearing, he actually took who Daniela was into consideration, instead of just forcing himself on her emotionally as I find most of Cole’s other leads have done in this series.

The solution to their problem was obvious early on but the story still flowed well. I would have loved this to be bigger story rather than a short one. Ah well – one can hope! I didn’t read Showalter’s story as I’m not fond of her characters nor the world she’s created for her series. I liked the first story, Untouchable by Kresley Cole but couldn’t read Tempt me Eternally by Gena Showalter, I did try but I just don’t like stories where the male insists that he’s always right and that the female wants sex with him, and that she should submit to the male no matter what her opinon or wants.

I also have an issue with the too beautiful to resist characters overwhelming with their pheromones etc. I don’t find this sexy or romantic. I know some people do, but it just aggravates me and I’m going to stop trying to read them. It gets a 2.

The characters could have real promise for me in someone elses hands. Untouchable by Kresley Cole is the story of a valkyrie, Daniela, who is actually part-Ice Fey and really likes the cold, only Murdoch Wroth has fallen in love with her, however he can’t touch her without hurting her, as his warmth burns her. They have to work out a place for themselves and who they are.

I actually liked this story, only I worked out some of how they would work things out a lot earlier than the story did. Overall the Cole story was diverting but I just didn’t want to keep reading the Showalter.

I found a lot of how the folks in the Cole Story dealt with things quite interesting and different. Nothing new here. Probably more for fans of the respective series. A duology. Gena Showalter gives us Tempt Me Eternally. While Kresley’s story made me want to read another of her IAD novels, Gena’s left me satisfied it was only a short story. I won this hardcover from the Knight Agency. I haven’t read either author before though I have seen their names everywhere, so I was curious to give them a try.

In the end, I found both well-written, but found the male leads to be a turn-off in the start. Christmas is a theme in both but it’s not integral to either story. Daniella is an ice maiden, half Valkyrie and half Icere. She requires constant cold, and can’t sustain touch with anyone else. When she sees the vampire Murdoch, it’s lust at first sight–after she survives an attack of Icere assassins. I had a difficult time getting into this one as it’s obviously a well-established world with a cast of existing characters that overlapped into this book; by the end, this became very confusing as several side characters had mates suddenly pop up.

The sex scenes were a bit crude for my liking, as they leaned more towards crazed lust than actual romance. Aleaha is a shapeshifter desperate to fit in with the humans of Earth. She’s assuming the role of a police-like officer when Breean arrives as part of an alien invasion.

I was bothered by the scene of Breean’s arrival, as his honey-scented pheromones induce anyone to a sexual frenzy whether they want it or not–and it’s my belief that if they don’t want it, that’s rape, even if the guy is a well-endowed alien.

Thankfully, Breean backs off if he hadn’t, I would have stopped reading in disgust and a romance begins developing between the two. I really like Showalter’s writing style.

It’s well-paced, and she created a very intriguing world in a short amount of space. This ended up being my favorite of the two, which was a huge turn around from my opinion at the start. Didn’t enjoy this one as much as I normally like Kresley Cole. I think I may be getting over my paranormal craze. I was also glad to get a chance to read a story by Gena Showalter, as she shows up on all sorts of “recommended” lists for me.

I liked her story, but I’m not going to run out and by anything by her. Gena Showalter is one of my favorite authors. I got this book from the library since it was just a short story. I didn’t know what to expect and was rewarded with something totally different to what I have read from her before. Since I like both of those series I gave this one a shot.

I am looking forward to testing some more of her writing. First off, I’m not a big fan of anthologies. They usually mean I end up spending money on a book I will only read pages of because I only care about one of the authors or because that story fits into a series somewhere and I’m a consummate completest.

This one was even more annoying because it came out in hardcover. I sucked it up and bought it any way because Kresley Cole is one of my favorite authors, and the Immortals After Dark series is addictive.

So I’m reviewing specifically her story, Untouchable. I may eventually go back and read Gena Showalters I am a fan of some of her work but for now I just focused on Daniela and Murdoch. Actually, while the theme is ice and Christmas is briefly mentioned, it’s not very Christmasy. I found the cold theme oddly refreshing. Now, to the story: Basically, Daniella is a valkyrie but she was born to and Icere mother.

The Icere are people of the cold, their bodies are cold, and warmth of any kind is deadly to them. For Danii that means contact with and non-Icere beings burns painfully, and getting overheated is a constant concern.

When it’s discovered that she is Murdoch’s Bride his fated mate , their inability to touch physically presents a huge problem. The characters were surprisingly well rounded, considering that their developement had to take place in only pages.

I liked that. Danii’s desperation to be loved and feel physical affection is heartbreaking. Murdoch, meanwhile, was somewhat of a rake when human–commiting to one woman, let alone one he cannot touch, is frustrating and life altering for him. I liked them as a couple. They certainly aren’t my favorite of the series, but I wouldn’t expect them to be.

I would like to say that Kresley Cole is one of the most endlessly creative authors I’ve encountered.
